How to Read Luck-Pillar Stems and Branches
Read the arriving Luck-Pillar stem and branch as one dated pair while preserving their different evidence: Ten Gods, roots, hidden stems, and relations.
Overview
A Luck Pillar must be read as a complete Jiazi. The visible stem receives a Ten-God role relative to the Day Master and participates in stem relations; the branch contributes hidden stems, roots, seasonal context, and branch interactions. Their own generation, control, combination, or conflict matters, but neither half should be discarded. The pair is then compared with the natal chart and shorter timing layers.

Map the arriving stem from the Day Master
Derive its Ten-God role using element and polarity, then inspect combinations, controls, generations, and whether it has support in the arriving or natal branches.
Visibility does not guarantee effective strength; a stem can be rootless, combined, controlled, or redirected.

- Check root and relation support.
Open the branch into its actual evidence
List the branch’s canonical hidden stems, their Ten-God roles, and whether they provide roots or competing functions.
Then calculate combinations, clashes, punishments, harms, breaks, and seasonal context against the natal branches without assuming every nominal relation fully forms.

- Separate contact from completed formation.
Read stem and branch together before weighting phases
The arriving stem and branch can support, drain, control, or contradict one another. This internal relation affects how accessible each role may be.
School-specific stem-first or branch-first weighting may be added only after the complete pair has been assessed and the convention is named.

- Label weighting as methodology.
Return the pair to natal structure and time
Compare the timed pair with Month Command, Day Master strength, structure, useful functions, palace positions, and the annual layer.
The result should identify mechanisms and uncertainty, not convert one Ten God or branch relation into a promised event.
