Overview

Event-timing validation requires rules set before the event record is inspected. Define the natal dependency, timing layer, technical trigger, thematic category, date window, specificity, and what counts as a hit, near hit, miss, or ambiguous case. Evaluate every eligible period, not only the one that resembles the event, and distinguish exact records from recalled or rounded dates. Known events used for rectification or rule selection cannot serve as independent validation. Stronger evidence comes from pre-registered, out-of-sample observations with complete reporting and appropriate comparison rates. Even a good match demonstrates correspondence under the stated method, not causation or a guaranteed forecast.

Pre-register the trigger and match rule

Avoid broad labels that can match nearly anything. Define what would count as a miss and when the rule is not applicable.

Audit the event record

Record the event date or range, source, precision, whether it was contemporaneously documented, and whether the analyst knew it during chart selection.

Do not convert a recalled year into an exact month or day. Keep multiple plausible dates and test each without choosing the best fit.

Evaluate all eligible periods

List every period that meets the technical trigger and whether the specified event theme occurred. Report false positives, false negatives, near matches, and ambiguous cases.

Compare ordinary frequency and alternative explanations where possible. A common life event within a wide window supplies weak evidence even when the wording feels precise.

Separate correspondence from prediction

A retrospective match may illustrate how a method is applied, but it does not prove causation, portability to other charts, or future accuracy.

High-stakes plans should rely on direct risk information and qualified advice. Timing analysis can support reflection, not certainty or delay of necessary action.
