Overview

Bazi classics circulate through editions, reprints, anthologies, scans, OCR, punctuation projects, and commentaries that may differ. A variant record should identify every witness compared, transcribe the relevant forms, distinguish character variants from punctuation, omission, interpolation, or commentator text, and explain whether the difference changes the rule. The editorial reading must be labeled and reversible. A popular digital string is not automatically the earliest or best reading, and silently normalizing variants can erase school history or change meaning.

Build a witness list before choosing a reading

Record the bibliographic identity and lineage of each edition, scan, transcription, or database entry.

Do not count copied reprints as independent witnesses or treat OCR output as a reliable edition without checking the image.

  • Identify witness dependence.
  • Verify OCR against scans.

Transcribe and classify each difference

Preserve the original form and mark whether the difference is a character, punctuation, omission, addition, order, title, or commentary boundary.

Keep diplomatic transcription separate from normalized searchable text so readers can reconstruct the editorial decision.

  • Store original and normalized forms.
  • Label commentary layers.

Test whether the variant changes the rule

Explain whether a reading changes the actor, condition, exception, sequence, scope, or conclusion of the passage.

If the difference is orthographic only, say so. If it is consequential and unresolved, publish parallel interpretations.

  • Assess semantic impact.
  • Preserve unresolved alternatives.

Do not manufacture a single ancient consensus

An editorial choice is a documented working reading, not proof that every historical school used the same text.

Version changes should be logged, citations updated, and affected interpretations reviewed rather than silently overwritten.

  • Label editorial choices.
  • Keep revision history.
