San Ming Tong Hui: Scope, Method, and Citation

Overview

San Ming Tong Hui (三命通會, Sān Mìng Tōng Huì) is a large Ming-period compendium associated with Wan Minying. It preserves and organizes material on calendrical foundations, stems and branches, Ten Gods, structures, Nayin, fate stars, family roles, timing, verses, and earlier authorities. Its breadth is the reason it must be cited precisely: a rule from one juan may use a different framework from a passage elsewhere. The work is especially useful for tracing how multiple lineages were assembled and compared, not for pretending that every included rule forms one perfectly unified system. A responsible reading names the volume, passage, edition, rule family, and conditions, while separating historical description from OpenFate’s current calculation and editorial policy.

Recognize an encyclopedic compilation

The work gathers technical tables, historical explanations, verses, quoted authorities, classifications, and examples across multiple volumes. Its internal diversity is evidence of transmission, not an error to erase.

Identify whether a statement is the compiler’s framing, a quoted earlier source, a verse, a commentary, or an example. These voices have different evidentiary weight.

  • Name the juan and passage type.
  • Keep quoted authorities distinct from compiler commentary.

Keep its rule families separate

Nayin, year-based Lu Ming, Day-Master Ten Gods, structures, fate stars, stem-branch relations, and timing may appear in the same work without sharing one decision hierarchy.

Before applying a rule, state its reference point, required inputs, formation conditions, period, and whether later Ziping practice adopted, modified, or rejected it.

  • Do not blend Nayin and Day-Master logic silently.
  • Declare the rule family before interpretation.

Use volume-level citations and textual comparison

Cite an accessible scan or transcription with edition, volume, heading, and a short locator. If punctuation or characters differ, preserve the source wording and record the editorial normalization.

Compare repeated rules across volumes and other classics before claiming a stable consensus. Similar wording may carry different examples, limits, or attribution.

  • Make every quotation retrievable.
  • Report variants that could change the rule.

Do not convert breadth into certainty

A large compendium can document many traditions but cannot make every included claim mutually consistent or empirically proven. Frequency of inclusion is not a reliability score.

Use current deterministic code for chart calculation and direct evidence for health, law, finance, safety, and personal decisions. Present historical rules as bounded interpretive sources.

  • Encyclopedic coverage is not universal agreement.
  • Historical rules do not replace present-day evidence.
