Zi Ping Method: Day Master, Month Command, and Timing
Learn the core sequence of the Zi Ping method, its shift toward Day-Master-centered four-pillar analysis, and the rules that must be declared before interpretation.
Overview
The Zi Ping method (子平法, Zǐ Píng Fǎ) is the broad Day-Master-centered Four Pillars tradition that became a dominant framework for later Bazi analysis. It derives the Ten Gods relative to the Day Master, gives the Month Command and seasonal state major weight, examines roots, revealed and hidden stems, strength, structures, useful functions, stem-branch relations, and then applies luck cycles and annual timing to the natal chart. “Zi Ping” names a family of transmitted methods rather than one frozen algorithm; classics and modern schools differ in priority and terminology. A reliable reading must declare calendar policy, reference point, school, decision order, exceptions, and uncertainty instead of using the label as proof of consensus.

Understand the method family and historical shift
Zi Ping practice is commonly distinguished from earlier year-centered and Nayin-heavy Lu Ming methods by its emphasis on the Day Master and four-pillar relations. Transmission occurred through multiple texts and commentaries.
Do not describe every modern Bazi rule as original to one founder. Name the text or school that supports the adopted definition and priority.
- Distinguish historical method families.
- Cite a source for each claimed priority.
Publish the calculation and reading sequence
Verify calendar conversion and four pillars, establish Day Master and Ten Gods, inspect Month Command, roots, revelation, hidden stems, strength, structure, relations, and useful functions, then add timing.
Schools may reorder or weight these steps. State the chosen order and what evidence can revise an earlier conclusion rather than presenting an invisible scoring model.
- Separate deterministic chart data from interpretation.
- Make revision rules and dependencies visible.
Preserve differences inside the Zi Ping family
Strength, structure, climate, circulation, image, and other approaches may all call themselves Ziping while asking different primary questions. Shared vocabulary does not guarantee shared definitions.
When outputs differ, compare assumptions, evidence, and scope. Do not merge them into one answer unless an explicit editorial policy defines the synthesis.
- Label the school behind each conclusion.
- Do not hide method conflict.
Keep a traditional framework from becoming a verdict
Zi Ping symbols organize traditional relationships and timing; they do not establish personality, illness, morality, wealth, marriage, crime, or exact events as facts.
Use direct evidence for consequential decisions and publish uncertainty. Historical reach and popularity do not substitute for empirical validation.
- No one-symbol or one-school verdict.
- Traditional interpretation does not replace professional evidence.
