What Is Latent Grace (虛夾官祿) in BaZi?
Learn the Xu Jia Guan Lu sexagenary flanking examples, missing middle official-lu unit, exact sequence conditions, and OpenFate boundary.
Overview
Latent Grace is the standard English name for 虛夾官祿, a short San Ming Tong Hui rule in which two present sexagenary units flank a missing middle unit that carries the relevant Official and Lu relation. For Jia, Ren Shen and Jia Xu flank Gui You; for Yi, Gui Wei and Yi You flank Jia Shen. This is a sequence-based virtual invitation, not proof from two neighboring branches, an empty palace, or a visible Officer star. The source’s claim that it can exceed explicit Official and Lu is historical praise, not a modern outcome guarantee. It does not prove hidden support, office, promotion, income, rank, or success.

The “virtual” object is a precise missing sexagenary unit
For a Jia context, the source identifies Gui You as the relevant Official-Lu unit and says Ren Shen plus Jia Xu flank it in the sexagenary sequence. For Yi, Jia Shen is the middle unit, flanked by Gui Wei and Yi You. The two visible units therefore invite one exact absent combination.
The rule is not derived from branch adjacency alone: Shen and Xu flank You only when their stems form the stated neighboring sexagenary units. It is also distinct from every general Gong Lu, Gong Gui, void, empty-palace, or hidden-combination rule.

- Identify why the middle stem–branch carries Official and Lu for the subject.
Sequence, absence, subject relation, position, and damage all need a declared policy
A defensible reading must define which pillars may form the flank, whether order and distance matter, whether the invited unit must be absent, and how filling, clash, combination, void, or duplicate units affect the claim. The short passage does not settle every modern edge case.
The flanked middle unit must also be the correct Official and Lu relation for the relevant stem. Seeing Shen and Xu, or Wei and You, without the specified stems does not establish this configuration.

OpenFate does not infer an absent official result from branch spacing
OpenFate can calculate pillars, sexagenary order, Ten Gods, Lu Shen, combinations, clashes, and voids. It does not currently output Latent Grace or virtually insert Gui You, Jia Shen, or any other missing unit into a chart.
Automation would require a complete source table, exact sequence and pillar policy, fill and damage precedence, subject mapping, negative fixtures, and wording that clearly distinguishes a virtual classical relation from calculated presence. The Wiki does not alter the chart.

An invited Official-Lu unit does not reveal secret support or guaranteed office
Latent Grace does not prove hidden patrons, inherited privilege, public office, promotion, examination success, salary, wealth, social class, legal protection, relationships, health, or success. “Better than carrying explicit Official and Lu” is classical praise, not measured evidence.
Career, finance, education, and legal decisions require real qualifications, records, contracts, and current opportunities. Do not promise invisible backing, sell access, or omit ordinary risk because an absent unit is classically flanked.
