What Is Leading and Following Enclosure (引從包承) in BaZi?
Learn the before-as-leading and after-as-following rule, Jia-Zi examples, near-far preference, counterexamples, official-noble variant and enclosure route.
Overview
Leading and Following Enclosure is the workbook’s English name for 引從包承. The source defines a pillar before the natal-year reference as “leading” and one after it as “following.” For Jia-Zi it discusses Bing-Yin and Ding-Mao on the leading side and Ren-Xu and Gui-Hai on the following side, preferring a distant leader and a near follower. It then complicates the rule with punishment, combinations, Food God, Lu, Horse, Nayin vitality, same-xun, noble markers and several counterexamples. A later “Official and Noble Leading and Following” variant and a simpler enclosure route are related but not identical tests. Because the long entry preserves several methods rather than one complete universal table, OpenFate does not currently issue a composite verdict.

Leading and following depend on direction and distance
The Jia-Zi discussion places Bing-Yin and Ding-Mao before the reference and Ren-Xu and Gui-Hai after it. Its stated preference is for the leader to be farther away and the follower to be nearer.
Other examples use Jia-Zi between Gui-Hai and Yi-Chou, or Bing-Yin between Yi-Chou and Ding-Mao. A valid reading must name the adopted cycle, reference pillar, direction and distance.
- Show the reference, both sides and their distances.
- Do not infer direction from isolated stems or branches.
Combinations, counterexamples and related routes prevent a one-line test
The source weighs Zi–Mao punishment against Food God, Lu and Horse evidence, discusses Ding–Ren and Mao–Xu combinations, prefers same-xun and vital Nayin support, and rejects cases with punishment, harm, clash or breakage.
It separately records Official-and-Noble leading/following and a simpler enclosure in which surrounding branches contain the natal reference. Those routes must be labelled rather than silently merged.
- Display supporting and defeating evidence together.
- Keep leading/following, official-noble and enclosure routes distinct.
OpenFate does not fill missing positions or combine separate methods
The product can show actual sexagenary pillars, xun identity and already implemented combinations or branch interactions.
There is no Leading and Following Enclosure detector. No missing pillar, virtual Official, Noble, Lu or Horse, distance score, report field or saved-chart value is created.
- Use actual positions and implemented relations only.
- No virtual symbols, composite score or report mutation.
Being led or enclosed cannot prove social status or protection
The source attaches ministerial rank and high status to selected examples. Historical biographies and elite language do not validate the pattern’s effects.
Do not infer authority, employment, promotion, income, wealth, patronage, legal outcome, personality, relationships, safety, health or lifespan.
- No authority, promotion, income, wealth or patronage guarantee.
- No legal, relationship, safety, health or lifespan prediction.
