What Is Yin Borrows Yang Life (陰借陽生) in BaZi?
Learn the five Yin-stem support routes of Yin Borrows Yang Life, their exact branch or stem requirements, Month qi condition and product boundary.
Overview
Yin Borrows Yang Life is the standard English name for 陰借陽生. The classical rule says the five Yin Day Stems should not always be judged by mechanically applying the Yang-stem birth and Yin-stem death sequence. It gives five narrow support routes: Yi in a Wu context needs Hai; Ding-You needs Yin; Ji-Mao needs Shen; Xin in a Zi context needs Ji Earth; and Gui-Mao needs Shen. The examples are not interchangeable and still require the pattern and month qi to connect, while mixed Officer and Killing is named as a problem. OpenFate calculates the components but does not declare this composite pattern.

The rule gives five distinct Yin-stem support routes
The source uses separate images and requirements for Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin and Gui. Hai, Yin, Shen or Ji Earth is required by the stated route; one support cannot be substituted across every Yin stem.
Its examples demonstrate the route within complete charts. A safe implementation records the relevant Day Stem, the named seat or context and the required supporting component.
- Select the route from the actual Yin Day Stem.
- Require the exact support named for that route.
Yang growth is a qualified support model, not a replacement life-stage table
The passage warns against a mechanical “Yang lives, Yin dies” conclusion, but it does not erase the ordinary Twelve Life Stage calculation. Instead it adds a source-labeled interpretive route when the named support exists.
Connection to year or month qi and the broader pattern still matters. Mixed Officer and Killing is a named blocker, and missing support leaves the route unconfirmed.
- Preserve the ordinary life-stage output beside the classical overlay.
- Check month qi, pattern, support and Officer-Killing mixing.
OpenFate preserves its life-stage convention and exposes the support facts
The engine calculates Day Stem, branches, Twelve Life Stages, hidden stems, Ten Gods and Month Command under its documented convention.
There is no Yin Borrows Yang Life detector and the page does not rewrite a Yin stem’s stage. Any future implementation must version all five routes and retain the original calculation.
- Keep the deterministic life-stage result unchanged.
- Treat the five routes as separate, reviewable overlays.
Borrowed life does not predict vitality, fertility or longevity
“Life” and “birth” refer to elemental growth language. They do not measure physical vitality, reproductive capacity, pregnancy or lifespan.
Do not use this pattern for medical, fertility, mortality, wealth or status claims. Any consequential health or family decision requires appropriate evidence and professional care.
- No vitality, fertility, pregnancy or lifespan inference.
- No medical, wealth or status guarantee.
