What Is Metal-Wood Balance (金木間隔) in BaZi?
Learn the two Jin Mu Jian Ge source routes: balanced Metal–Wood shaping and Yi–Geng transformation, with strength, Resource and luck evidence.
Overview
Metal-Wood Balance is the standard English name for 金木間隔, a San Ming Tong Hui section with two distinct worked routes. One has a strong Yi Wood Day Master shaped by two separated Geng Metal stems; the other has weak Yi, strong Geng Officer, Yi–Geng Metal transformation, Water Resource support, and favorable directional movement. The closing rule asks Metal and Wood to be proportionate rather than one side overwhelming the other. This is not a generic element-balance score and does not prove talent, marriage, office, discipline, promotion, or success.

The source gives two mechanisms that must not be collapsed
The first chart, Ji Si, Geng Wu, Yi Mao, Geng Chen, has Yi seated on Mao and born in Wu month, with two Geng stems described as shaping Wood through separation. The second, Geng Shen, Wu Zi, Yi You, Jia Shen, treats Yi as weak, Geng Officer as strong at You, and Yi–Geng as transforming toward Metal.
The second example also uses Zi Water as Resource, Shen–Zi combination as support for Wood, and southeast movement as a route toward greater body strength and control. These are different structural arguments, not duplicate proof of a single ratio formula.
- Identify which of the two source mechanisms is being claimed.
- Do not blend shaping and transformation into one vague balance rule.
Proportion means functional capacity, not equal element counts
The closing sentence values Metal and Wood when their qi is appropriately matched. That requires Day-Master strength, Officer or Killing purity, roots, season, position, transformation conditions, Resource support, and damage checks; two Metal tokens and two Wood tokens are not automatically balanced.
Excess Metal may over-control weak Wood, while insufficient Metal may not shape strong Wood in the source metaphor. Yet these are chart relations, not claims that pressure improves people. Other structures and useful-element policies may take precedence.

- Keep transformation, support, damage, and competing structures visible.

Metal shaping Wood is not a license for coercion
This pattern does not prove talent, obedience, discipline, resilience, marriage quality, executive fitness, punishment tolerance, office, wealth, morality, health, or success. Classical “shaping” imagery must not justify controlling or harming a person.
Education, employment, relationships, health, and legal choices require consent, current evidence, and qualified advice. Do not recommend harsh treatment or promise advancement from an elemental metaphor.
