What Is Water Following Pattern (潤下格) in BaZi?
Learn the Ren–Gui and Shen–Zi–Chen rule for 潤下格, how clash, dead stages, limited Earth and Wood alter it, and what OpenFate actually reports.
Overview
Water Following Pattern is the workbook standard English name for 潤下格, often translated as the Moistening Downward Pattern. San Ming Tong Hui starts with a Ren or Gui Day Master and a complete Shen–Zi–Chen Water frame. It warns against Mao or Si dead or exhausted positions and against punishment or clash that either stops or disorders the flow. The text also preserves a qualified view that excessive Water may need one or two Earth signals as banks, after which Wood damaging Earth and Metal rescuing it matter. This is more nuanced than a blanket “no Earth” rule. OpenFate currently reports qualifying dominant-Water cases as generic 從旺格 or 從旺未純, not as a separate 潤下格 detector.

The main route requires Ren or Gui and a complete Water frame
The prose begins with a Ren or Gui day meeting all of Shen, Zi and Chen. It then checks whether Mao or Si draws the structure into dead or exhausted positions and whether punishment or clash prevents orderly flow.
A single Water branch, winter birth or a high Water percentage is not the same rule. The Day Master, complete frame, season, actual interactions and every opposing participant must be shown before the named tradition is discussed.

The source allows a bank for excess Water, then audits what damages it
An alternate clause says very abundant Water may need one or two Earth signals to form banks. Once Earth is used that way, Wood combining or attacking it can break the restraint, while Metal may rescue the Earth–Wood relationship in the source’s sequence.
This does not mean every Earth appearance is helpful. Amount, position, strength and interaction determine whether Earth is a workable bank or an opposing force. A modern “no Earth” purity rule is a different policy and should be labeled as such.

Reviewed fixtures anchor a textbook-like Shen–Zi–Chen case, but production output remains 從旺格 when formed and 從旺未純 when the dominance evidence is incomplete.
潤下格 is not a separate emitted status today. It is also not 土局潤下, a different historical entry beginning with a Wu or Ji Earth Day Master in strong Water. This page changes neither route nor any saved report.

Water flow is not a diagnosis of emotion, travel or health
The pattern does not establish intelligence, intuition, flexibility, instability, migration, communication talent or a particular profession. Traditional language about flow is structural imagery.
Do not predict mood, addiction, kidney or fluid illness, accidents, career, wealth, relationships or lifespan from 潤下格. Health and safety decisions require real clinical and situational evidence.
